Rifle grandpa brought back from WW2
« on: February 14, 2015, 11:54:44 PM »
Looking for some help on what i have hear. Grandpa had brought back some guns with him from WW2 in germany when they raided a german building. This mauser is one of them. I have been told it looks to be chambered in 30.06. And may have not made it to portugal for its original intent? It also has a sight i have never seen. It says Redfield on it. I cannot find any other pictures online showing this same stock either with the diamond wood inlay on the rear (both sides)and the oval wood piece on the bottom that looks like it may be a hideaway for somthing? Id love to know if i can open that or if its glued in place. So what do i have here? thanks for the help.

You have a 1941 Portuguese contract Mauser that has been extensively sporterised. The rear sight, handguard and barrel band are not original to the rifle. The stock (also not original to the rifle)  has been cut down and the wooden plugs cover original cutouts in it. Originally it was chambered for 7,92x57 AKA 8mm Mauser.

The image represents what it originally looked like.

wow thank you very much for the info. i assume it must have been modified after he brought it back? Would you say pretty much all value was lost when it was modified this much?

I think it still looks like a nice looking rifle, even with the modifications.  Oil it up and have fun with it.

It is what it is - a good hunting rifle.  It will never be anything else.

I would say Sarge is spot on target.  With those ballastics in that caliber, it would make a fine hunting rifle.   Enjoy.  Mine is not a nice as yours and it is my go to rifle.
