German mauser

I have my fathers mauser that he brought home from war, Dad passed away last year and left me this rifle, I know nothing about this gun can someone help. Bold letters bnz below that is 42, Above that is a w in circle and Bc. mod 98. 1417 in several places. thanks steve

Your rifle was made in Steyr Austria in 1942.  1417 is the ser nr.  Does it have a letter after or below that nr?  If so that letter is a part of the ser nr and should always be listed with the nr for insurance or what ever. 
Do you have the war trophy paper?  It will be either a half or full page form that lists the rifle/ser nr.  It will also have your dads name and unit on it.

Hey thanks for info. no other numbers, have 0 paper trail of gun dad brought it back after war , never told how he got it you know how those ww2 veterans were , He entered war just after d -day with the 12th armor as a tank commander. Hey thanks for getting back. Steve
