1944 HSc?
« on: July 08, 2016, 04:28:51 PM »
I believe I have a late 1944 production HSc based upon serial #9256XX. The only marking is an eagle over "N" on the right trigger guard web which I believe means it is a commercial model. This was given to me by my father who was in France and Belgium during WWII. It came with a holster which I believe may have been original to the gun, but I can't be sure of that. My curiosity is with the holster, as there is an area on the flap that has been blackened for some reason. I have pictures on my phone, but don't know how to post them on this forum. If someone knows how to do that I could send them the photos from my phone. Thank you for any help.

Welcome, CCT.  I would be glad to help if I can.  Pictures and a complete serial number would be necessary.  Determination of Commercial or not depends on the LEFT side of the Trigger Guard.  If no markings there, then it's Commercial.  Other markings signify Military or Police Acceptance.  Finish and matched serial numbers are very important also.

You will have to transfer your pictures to a computer then use the "Attach: Browse..." function to upload them to the site.  Best size is under 800KB and maximum size is 1MB.

Thanks, Warbird! There are no markings on the left side; only the eagle over "N" on the right. The barrel is numbered 652 which matches the serial number of 925652. Are there other places I should search for matching numbers? I'll need to work on downloading the pictures tomorrow. Thanks, again.

"652" should be hand written (electro-penciled) on the flat area under the nose of the Slide.  Production date was in fact September 1944, only a few months after the Allies hit the beaches at Normandy, France.  I look forward to your confirmation of the third serial number and the photos after which I will try to give you a current value (depending on the quality of your pictures)..

652 was barely visible on the nose of the slide. I would have never seen it if you hadn't told me where to look. Thanks! I hope my pictures come through. I'm getting an error message that my file is too large. I'll try sending a single picture at a time. That didn't work. Not sure what I'm doing wrong

How big are the files?  They can't be larger than 1MB.

Each picture is over 1 MB. Don't know how to reduce them.

Let's try this again. I think I've resized the pictures. We'll see.

While examining for other markings, I did find on the right side of the slide, near the front, a faint eagle over an "N" stamping.

That's correct ... and there should be one on the Barrel as well.  The Proof Marks were placed on these three main structures: Frame, Slide, and Barrel to denote safety.

Your all-matching Late Wartime HSc appears to be in excellent condition.  Its value would be between $650 and $700.  Congratulations!

Thanks for your help and information, Warbird. Did the holster appear to be correct for the period and the gun?

The Holster is a German Army Pattern but without any marking.  Condition appears to be too new for an artifact from WWII.  But I am not an expert on leather products so judgment is left to others.

Great looking HSc.  That holster sure looks fresh.
