Model HSC Pistol / Near-mint 'sock drawer' HSc
« on: May 21, 2016, 03:34:46 PM »
This week I received a HSc I purchased at an auction. It was a bit of a gamble, as the photos showed a pistol that was looking so good (including the grips) that most mistook it for a refinish/refurb job.

But after receiving the pistol, all turned out to be correct and in excellent condition. The pistol was partially covered with traces of old, dried out, gun grease and it was virtually bone dry.

The photo and scans I made really don't do the pistol justice, but you get an idea of the condition. I guess someone got this pistol issued during the war and decided he didn't have any use for it, planted it in his sock drawer and forgot all about it  :)

Non Gun Items / Promotional item - small pocket knife
« on: May 10, 2016, 10:05:50 AM »
Here is a neat little pocket knife I picked up recently.

The knife was made by the company of Paul A. Henckels in Solingen, as a promotional item for Mauser. They did a lot of these promotional items for German companies. The knife has a neat little leather holster.

Here is a barrel proof on one of mine.

AA is the date code for '00 = 2000.

Hi,

Sorry I missed this post. I don't know if these US imports were proofed in Germany prior to exporting.
If they were, there should be a proof date (2 digits or 2 letters) as well as an eagle/N marking and a proof house marking in the slide and barrel.

Judging from your serial number, I'd say 2001 - 2002.

Model 1910 Pistol / Re: Unusual Mod.1910

Interesting pistol.

Too bad it was deactivated. But is it still possible to strip the pistol to the point where the side plate can be removed?
I'm curious whether the side plate is numbered at the bottom and if there are traces of modifications on the inside.

It could be that the side plate was made for this pistol as a replacement by a competent gun smith, using a 1914 humpback side plate as a substitute piece. I've seen several examples of 1910 and 1914 pistols that had parts repaired/replaced in order to keep them going. I have a 1910 side latch with a gun smith made replacement barrel latch. Instead of the push button, it is held in place with a little screw.

b.t.w. the Mauser train was captured in Tirol, by the US Army. Not in France by the French army. The first crew to reach the train after its capture were actually British intelligence personnel. But most of the Mauser museum (and reference collection) was stored not far away from the factory in Oberndorf, and the French indeed captured Oberndorf and, sadly for us, the museum collection. Most of the collection was looted by French soldiers and many unique guns disappeared into illegality in France. Now and then, interesting guns do come out of the wood work there :)

It is the basis on which the magazine is constructed. The first production step of the magazine.

Model HSC Pistol / Norwegian HSc -
« on: March 08, 2016, 02:05:37 PM »
Thanks to one of our forum members, I was able to close a gap in the HSc collection I am putting together.

I contacted a number of Norwegian collectors in the past, explaining that I was looking for a Norwegian Police marked example. Most told me I was crazy, that this was not a collectible and others didn't reply at all. Asle did, and he helped me to find a very nice example, including Norwegian police holster.

After a long, long paper trail and some transportation issues, the pistol made it safely here and I was able to look it over. Nice Waffenamt marked military HSc that spent the remainder of its service life with the police in Norway.

Model 1914 Pistol / Re: 1914 Mauser with added number to serial?

Interesting police pistol.

It has travelled a bit, markings adjusted when required. It wouldn't surprise me if some arsenal reworker 'improved' the visibility of the serial number on the slide during one of these remarking/reworking transitions.

I like it, it has character.

Jim,

The most likely explanation for this marking in my opinion: A German dealer marking, applied by the dealer who sold it commercially.

C96 / C12 Broomhandle / Re: Approximate Production Dates for C96 Pistols
« on: January 21, 2016, 02:00:19 PM »
Many contracts  had their own serial ranges and Mauser was not very interested in keeping tabs on serial numbers. So the numbers can be all over the place without making much sense.

Mauser resold unfinished and unpaid contract guns to other parties, for example the Mexican C96 pistols were sold to Prussia and Wurttemberg..

I recently got a small batch of Mauser promotional items, some badges, pins and stickers.

The pins with the coat of arms logo are quite recent, the others most likely of 1970s - 1980s vintage.

Sorry, no type 94 available, but I can test fit it with a Colt 1903 as well, should also work well.
