Title: Frankenstein Belgian/Greek Mod98 advice
Post by: toguro123 on November 17, 2016, 04:20:02 PM
Just joined the forum so, hello everyone!

I have been looking for a Mauser bolt-action rifle to shoot at the range for quite some time now, and just yesterday I found one rifle that may fit this role. I just wanted to ask some of you Mauser experts for advice regarding shootability of my most recent find. Just to be clear, I am looking for a reasonable accurate, fun, functional and well-enough looking rifle at a reasonable price. The rifle needs not be historically relevant.

Anyway, I found at my local LGS a Belgian/Greek from 1930 with matching barrel, receiver, magazine plate, and stock. The bolt appears to be Turkish (straight with quarter-moon markings). The rifle has been sporterized (shortened stock). Sighting system is all original, the action is smooth, and the barrel shows no sign of pitting. The rifle is being sold for $300.

Are they asking for too much? Would the Turkish bolt affect (negatively) the functionality in any way? I own a Spanish Mauser M43. I would assume the Belgian and the Spanish can use the same ammo. Does it? Any comments in general?

Unfortunately I have not pictures to show you. Hopefully the description is enough.

Thanks guys

The description is enough that I would not spend $300 on such a rifle.  Most of these Belgian rifles I see were poorly cared for and show heavy rust/pitting under the stock.  The Turkish bolt won't help the value much.
