C96 / C12 Broomhandle / Re: New to me C96 with odd features... Help
« on: April 27, 2022, 08:43:33 AM »
The problem is to establish who ordered it, who rebuilt it, etc...

Mauser was notoriously sloppy when it came to issuing and registering C96 serial numbers. Many orders and smaller contracts were numbered in their own ranges and no records of those have survived (or found thusfar).

There are Mauser order books that survived, but these only list the order amount and not the serial numbers produced.

The New Safety was introduced in 1915, but it is difficult to tell if the gun with this serial number was built before or after 1915 and if the NS lockwork is a later addition.

That would make it a late 1942 example.

The number should be placed at the front bottom of the grip.
Sadly this interesting serial placement will hurt the value.

You have an army accepted HSc, collectable indeed.
What is the serial number?

Germany used the J. and I. intermittantly.
So it's most probably an abbreviation for an Infantry Regiment.

I don't like the style and placement of the serial number. Nor the wear marks in that area.

Could be signs of someone messing with the serial number.

Nice example of a 1936 rig.

Are you sure its 1938 and not 1936?

A 1938 P08 would be all blue. This one has strawed small parts that were phased out mid 1937.

They would be correct for a P08 up to mid 1937, but not on later ones.

Strange combination.
The G date is 1936 for army deliveries.
This is a commercial variation with a Mauser banner and commercial proofs. Blued small parts should be strawed, so it has been reblued.

Is the safety marked 'gesichert' ?

I get the feeling someone tried to convert your pistol from one magazine style to another.

Which would not be that strange with the obvious scarcity of the magazines.

A slide stop feature was standard on all HSc pistols in one form or another. Including slide release (closing) when a magazine is reinserted.

It is a HSc Super.

"CAT 6452" refers to the Italian gun model registry that used to be required for pistols made in Italy or sold on the Italian market.

Mine is a Gamba model 80. Should be identical really. No idea what that leaf spring is suposed to do. It's not present on other HSc models or the HSc 80.

Unfortunately the Gamba HSc's are almost impossible to find in Europe. Most were exported to the US.

It looks like someone tried to make a Browning .380 mag function with your pistol and made some modifications to get it to work.
