Can you identify unit a K98 was attached to?72.

I have a friend who’s granddad brought back a K98 from Germany.  It’s a legitimate matching serial 44 Byr gun.  It was manufactured in early 44 at Mauser AG Oberndorf.  His granddad was attached in Patton’s relief group that raced up during the Battle of the Bulge.  It’s Serial No. 27272.  Is there a way to determine what unit this gun was attached to?  Also, he’d like to know approximate value.
