Can anyone tell me what is the function of the disconnector? Can you fire the gun without it?

The Disconnector stops a semi-automatic firearm from going full automatic and possibly firing off an entire Magazine when the Trigger is pulled.  It can be considered a safety feature and your pistol should not be fired without it.
