how to identify my mauser 98 rifle

i am contemplating buying a model 98 mauser from cabelas, its sporterized the reference number is 5396026 its located at the westchester cabelas the serial number is 4744 thats all the info i have . how do i tell who made it, and is it worth buying. thanks for any help. dave
