Model HSC Pistol / Kriegsmarine Inspection Offices

During World War II, the German Wartime Navy or Kriegsmarine typically stamped an Eagle/M Property Mark on most items that were used in the naval service. In addition, Acceptance Marks were applied to military equipment by inspection offices, known as Marine Abnahme Kommando, located at various manufacturing facilities (similar to those of the Heereswaffenamt).

As background, the Marinewaffenamt (MWa) or Naval Weapons Office had oversight responsibility for purchased military equipment. It consisted of five Departments:
 MWa I – (Berlin) Cannons over 37mm or 1½”
 MWa II – (Magdeburg and Kiel) Ship’s Artillery
 MWa III – (Düsseldorf) Pistols, Flare Pistols, Spare Parts, Ammunition
 MWa IV – (Nuremberg) Optics
 MWa V – (Vienna and Brünn) Precision Engineering, Navigational Instruments

From those Departments, our research has identified the following inspection offices through their Acceptance Marks:
 Eagle/M III/2 – Gerbrüder Thiel Artillary Illumination Shell Timer Fuse
 Eagle/M III/3 – Walther Flare Pistols
 Eagle/M III/8 – Mauser HSc Pistols (December, 1940 to November, 1944)
 Eagle/M IV/1 – Zeiss Binoculars, Telescopes
 Eagle/M IV/5 – Unknown Manufacturer of Wood Box from U-Boat (for Optics Storage?)
 Eagle/M IV/8 – Nederlandse Instrumenten Compagnie (Nedinsco/Zeiss) Rangefinder
 Eagle/M V/2 – Unknown Manufacturer of Pivoting Handle (for Instrument Adjustment?)

From the data, it is obvious that many of the inspection offices have not been identified but the basic structure of the Marinewaffenamt is evident.  A typical HSc Property Mark engraved on the frontstrap of the grip and an Acceptance Mark stamped on the left side of an HSc trigger guard web are shown below.

Model HSC Pistol / HSc Instruction Manuals

Throughout its production history from 1940 to 1945 (Wartime) and 1968 to 1977 (New Model) there were ten HSc Instruction Manuals published by Mauser.  The following photos depict each of these.  For the collector, they can be individually and conveniently stored in plastic DVD cases without the center posts.

All the Wartime Manuals measure approximately 105mm x 150mm (4-1/8" x 5-7/8").  There were three designs and six variations printed in German.  The New Model Instruction Manuals were printed individually in German, French, and English measuring 4-1/4" x 5-1/2" and a later Combined Language version measuring 4-1/4" x 5-3/4".

Model HSC Pistol / Low Grip Screw KM HSc

I thought I would share my latest addition.  Kriegsmarine HSc serial number 700516, which would make it the 516th production pistol from December 1940.  It's all matching at about 97%-98% finish with the KM Property Mark engraved on the front Gripstrap, early dark wood stained Grip Panels, and, of course, the Low Grip Screw position notable on the first 1,345 HSc pistols.  Thanks to Tom Whiteman at Legacy Collectables for brokering the deal for me.

Looking for any factual information about these black HSc boxes, specifically years produced.  They are printed in English (for export?) and have been associated with both Wartime and Post-War pistols.

Model HSC Pistol / HSc Production Chart

This Wartime Production Chart provides researched production estimates for the HSc variations listed in Jan Still's excellent book, "Axis Pistols - Volume II", 1989.
 
It was created using an extensive database of information gathered from many sources, some of which came from the generous contributions of collectors in this forum and documents provided by the late Walter Schmid, founder and curator of the Waffenmuseum in Oberndorf, Germany.
