Title: X Marking

Is there any significance in the large 'X' in front of the serial number of my byf44 P38?

Yes, it tells us that your pistol is an imported Russian capture from WW 2.

Sarge is correct in addition the gun will be "dipped" and will have a black jelly bean lustre.  It probably is also import marked.  These guns are generally classed as shooters as the collector value is minimal to none. That is unless it is a rare 480 or somthing like that.  A BYF44 Mauser is a fairly commom variation.

The interesting thing is that some Russian Capture weapons have the X and some do not.  I have one that is not X marked.

Enjoy your pistol.
