Hi

At the end of WWI, the Imperial Danzig arsenal was abandoned by then almost non-existent central government in Berlin, and had to fend for itself.  For a short while, it used its Gewehr 98 parts  to make and sell sporting rifles.   Did not last long.  I have seen several listed on GunBroker in the last several months.  Shortly thereafter, the city of Danzig became a unique free city, more or less with parallel German and Polish institutions.  That lasted until Germany invaded Poland in September 1939.

GEW 98 Rifle / Chromed 1915 Danzig Gewehr 98

I recently took possession of the above Mauser, with virtually no wear anywhere, but chromed at some point after proofing.  My gunsmith thinks it might be a parade rifle.  It must have been brought home by a Doughboy, because there are no subsequent Reichswehr of Wehrmacht markings on it, which it certainly would have, had it been used in WWII.

Has anyone ever heard of a Gewehr 98 chromed at the factory, or by the Imperial Army (as opposed to chromed by the Doughboy who brought it home)?

 Often the cocking piece is not held far enough back by the sear, resulting in the feet (Or whatever the correct term is) of the not lining up with the grooves in the cocking piece.  Try swapping one or both out.  It's not a science, but rather art and luck!

Dear Experts:

Would a 1906 Oberndorf built Mauser (apparently commercial rather than military) have the modern 98 attributes and strength, and would it be large ring and standard long chambered?   Is there some comprehensive chart for determining the characteristics of the many Mauser variations?
