C96 / C12 Broomhandle / Crimping 30 mauser
« on: October 14, 2024, 08:15:23 PM »
68coupe asked about crimping the 30 Mauser when reloading. It was an old thread so I created a new one to respond.

I have the Lee 3-die set and the seating die has a crimp option. The instructions point out that if crimping you need to also trim the cases so that the crimp is uniform.
So it is an option but does not seem to be required. I crimped my boxer primed spent cases, but most of the time I was pulling bullets from Tokarev ammo and then reloading with some lower power Reddot charge, and in those cases I did not crimp. I never had any issues with either load.

Cheers!

Congratulation and welcome to the club!
I assume these are intended to be 'shooters' so let me first remind that you that should replace the recoil and hammer springs at least, since both are used to keep the bolt locked during firing.
  Now to your questions:
Do they have matching serial numbers (should be in 4 locations I think), and what mfg date do the numbers on the frame indicate (I think these are M30's in 7.63mm like mine).
Have you disassembled them and what condition are the interiors, firing pin, and bolt stop in?
How are the barrels, and locking lugs (compare the bolts side-by-side).
Yes replace the grips if they do not look original, and pay attention under the grips for rust and coat the inside of the grips with wax to prevent moisture from building up.
Stamps: If you are in the USA then some of the stamps might be importer marks, and these can be a challenge to identify (mine had none).
Tokarev ammo will fit but might be too hot so only shoot proper 7.63. But you can pull the tok bullets, dump the powder, and reload them.

Congratulation on your new 7.63!

I strongly suggest you also replace the hammer spring since it contributes significantly to keeping the slide in battery and is a big part of controlling the gun from opening too early. The slide spring does do some of the work to keep it in battery, but not all the work like it would on a modern pistol.

Adding to what reiver1 suggested...
Could the bolt-stop be binding on that new firing pin?
How does the new recoil spring compare in length and diameter to the old one, are the the same dimensions?

Congratulations!

Some questions that will help:
Do the serial numbers match and what manufacturing date does that indicate? (the forum has this info)
Caliber?
Any other proof marks you can share?
I see that leather lanyard, interesting but not sure if that is original - maybe others can comment.
Did it come with a stock?

Congratulations and welcome to the forum.
  What caliber is it?
You will definitely want to replace the hammer and recoil spring before a trip to the range (the hammer spring plays a large roll in keeping the slide locked). Wolf gun springs has what you need.
I will check out your channel and look for the Bolo in action.

Cheers!

Thank you for compiling this.
I used to buy old tokarev rounds and I would chronograph them out of a custom 1911 30 Mauser barrel before I regarded them as safe for my C96, but I never thought to package the data for others.

Cheers!

Very nice, do you know the history and do you shoot it much? Also can you share more pictures? I'm curious to see up close the difference between your pistol and a regular C96, especially the rear of the barrel extension and bolt stop area.

Thanks!

It looks like the 30 Luger sits so far in the chamber that the extractor can not engage the rim, but the 30 Mauser looks correct.

But I still think you should cast the chamber to be sure. Maybe something like playdoh would work.

I would guess it is a Chinese import.

Many of these guns like mine were sent to China, and then years later imported to the US. My M30, with all matching serial numbers, had “made in Germany” stamped on the side in Chinese characters (you can see it in another thread). I could never find importer marks on mine but clearly that is what happened in my case.

So your gun probably started it’s career in China in the 30’s and came back to the US in the 80’s or later. If only these guns could talk and tell us all the history they have been through!

Congratulations! If you plan to shoot it please review the threads on replacing springs.

I would disassemble the barrel, plug the barrel from the crown end just before the chamber, spray chamber down with silicone spray, then fill it with molten wax. Wax will shrink, plus lube, means wax cast will slide out and you can compare with published case dimensions.

Congrats on acquiring a terrific price of firearm history. Please review the threads on replacing springs before you fire it. Enjoy!

Did you solve this issue? I have no better suggestion than spraying the rear with oil and just keep rocking the hammer and safety until the lock starts to budge. You probably tried that....

My M30 is a re-import from China (you can see it my first post) with no refinishing at all and I never found import marks.
Edit: I see some references in other forums to "GA" import marks on the sides of the guns by the Mauser name. You might find some decent pictures if you join the forms and search. But can't find them on mine.

It is reasonable to assume Chinese import because of the time the gun was made (based on seral number), the condition (major refinishing), and the mixed parts all say that. If the gun was not an China export/import you would expect matching parts and never refinished, since that reduced its value as a collector. These are guesses but very informed ones.

I expect the original caliber was 7.63, can you tell if the barrel was relined? Also check under the grips for rust and see if the grips have a number as well.

Can't say this enough, if you plan to shoot it (and I hope you do) be sure to replace the springs!
