Title: Wartime HSc Barrel Block Markings
Post by: Like_Old_Guns on July 12, 2013, 08:51:05 PM
In looking over my wartime Mauser HSc barrel markings, I noticed a couple of different stampings in addition to the last three digits of the grip strap serial number.  Is there any known meaning to these stampings or are they simply inspector stampings whose meaning is lost to time?

Roger, all your examples show the interlaced "WR" factory inspection mark which stands for "Werksrevision" and can be interpreted as "Factory Proof" or "[Final] Audit" according to former Mauser Managing Director, Prof. Dr. Rolf Gminder.  It was used by a variety of manufacturers starting as early as World War I.

warbird, thanks, how about the block  letter "R" to the left of the numbering on the last example, numbered 964?

Unknown.  I have a Barrel with an "S" stamped on it but anything said about what the letters represent would be pure speculation at this point.

Thanks, warbird.  964 is from a fairly early Army HSc, marked with a [small] E/655 / ATP.  As soon as I get chance, I'll post pictures of it.  It's in pretty decent condition.

Thanks, prior to taking this photos to ask the question, I didn't realize the stamping was a die bounce.  It adds a little character .  It's from a late war matching WaA135 marked Army HSc.
