Low serial number model 98 help please
« on: January 24, 2017, 06:04:24 AM »
All,

I am looking for some history on my hunting rifle.  Was given to me by my grandfather 40 years ago...yes finally doing some homework. Model 98, 30-06 serial number 6020, yes really. Eagle holding swastika hallmarks among others.  Any assistance would be appreciated.

Up until about 1943, the Germans made weapons in blocks of 10,000, which each block denoted by a letter suffix.  For example, 1 to 9999, 1 to 9999 a, 1 to 9999 b, etc.  Your rifle looks like a "v" block.  Since it was once a military rifle, but has now been turned into a hunting rifle, it will be difficult to tell you much more as a lot of the original numbers and markings are gone.

Thank you, I will take a few more pictures of the hallmarks as they are quite clear...except in the photo I posted, of course!

What about the caliber 30-06?  I have 3 hunting rifles that were given to me. (1) 1917 Enfield rebarrelled for 30-338,   (2) Mauser 98's one was rebarreld for 280-338, and the other we are discussing.  I have read about the 8mm 8x57, 7x57, 7.92x57...etc.  so question number two, is the 30-06 caliber original to this Mauser?  Or is this another rebarrel?  My grandfather was a gunsmith and these were his rifles then given to me.

I will post more photos that should help.

Thanks again

No, this rifle was re-barreled to 30-06.
